I am a research archaeologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) working on eggshell from extinct flightless birds from Madagascar. My research investigates how these birds, known as œelephant birds, went extinct and how humans may have contributed to their extinction in the last 2000 years. The project involves studying eggshell from archaeological sites in Madagascar to understand how people were harvesting eggs from elephant bird nests. In addition to studying the archaeological samples, I will be studying modern eggshell of ostrich and other large flightless birds like emu. I am writing because the Department of Vertebrate Zoology at the NMNH is collaborating with me to build a research collection of modern eggshell and I am looking for farms that would be interested in working with us to build this collection. If the AOA is able to put me in touch with farms, ideally in the Virginia, Maryland area, this would be very helpful.
I look forward to hearing from you and to working with some of your member farms.
